Zhou is making it clear: he wants back on the F1 grid in 2026, and Ferrari’s reserve role is just the beginning.
Although Guanyu Zhou won’t be driving in front of his home crowd during the Chinese Grand Prix—thanks to the sprint format allowing only one free practice session—he’s not too bothered. In fact, the new Ferrari reserve driver is embracing the break from the relentless pace of being a full-time Formula 1 racer.
“It’s a real honor to join one of the most iconic teams in Formula 1,” Zhou says of his move to Ferrari. “Even though I’m not racing this year, I still get to learn, grow, and play an important role.”
After leaving Sauber, Zhou could have seen this as a step back. But instead, he views 2025 as a strategic pause—a chance to recharge and prepare for a stronger comeback.
“After a physically and mentally tough 2024, I’m actually happy to take a breather. This year gives me time to reset and focus on getting back into peak condition—mentally and physically,” he explains. “Other drivers have done the same and come back stronger. That’s my plan too.”
Not Just Watching from the Sidelines
Zhou’s role at Ferrari goes beyond just waiting for an opportunity. He’s deeply involved behind the scenes, especially with the simulator team in Maranello—helping fine-tune the car setup and offering real-time insights during race weekends.
“I’ve already started working with the simulator, and I’ll be using everything I’ve learned in F1 to support the team, both on and off the track,” he says. “This year is about building that relationship with Ferrari, understanding how we work together.”
Sharing a Garage with a Childhood Hero
Another perk of being at Ferrari? Teaming up with his childhood idol, Lewis Hamilton.
“Working with Lewis has been really inspiring. He’s incredibly humble and always looking for ways to improve—even after all his success,” Zhou shares. “That mindset is exactly what I want to carry into the next phase of my career.”
The two also bond over a shared passion for fashion, adding a personal connection to their professional relationship.
Eyes on 2026
Despite fully embracing his current role, Zhou makes it clear: he’s not done with F1.
“I still have the hunger to race full-time again. That’s the long-term goal, no question,” he says. “But this year is valuable. Just because I’m a reserve driver doesn’t mean I’m sidelined—I have real responsibilities and a real impact.”
One potential future seat could be with the new Cadillac F1 team, which is expected to have an opening in 2026. Could a Chinese driver join an American team? Zhou doesn’t rule anything out.
“If the opportunity comes, I’ll be ready. I’m working hard, staying sharp, and keeping myself in the best possible shape for when that moment arrives.”
For now, he’s laser-focused on contributing to Ferrari’s success in 2025.
“I’m excited to start this new chapter. Who knows what the future holds? For now, I’m right where I need to be.”
