At his first home Grand Prix, Guanyu Zhou was deeply moved by the overwhelming support from the local fans, leading to an emotional display at the finish line.
Guanyu Zhou experienced his first home Grand Prix, and the support in China was beyond his expectations. The Stake F1 driver finished 14th and received numerous accolades from the audience, which moved him to tears in front of the main grandstand after the race, as he had a special spot on the finish line.
“I knew we were going to stop 10 to 15 laps before the end, but I kept asking where we were in relation to those ahead, perhaps for the crowd,” said Zhou. “It was a very moving weekend; I tried to stay as focused as possible on my job.”
“Unfortunately, I couldn’t hear them during the race, but when I was doing pit stop trials, I could hear the fans cheering us on, and it was touching for the team and me, and I couldn’t have imagined having fans like that.”
He explained that he was overwhelmed with emotion after the finish, while his car performed solidly: “That’s what happened when I took off my helmet after the finish. I heard the sounds, saw them, and all the emotions came flooding back.”
“We’re not bringing many updates, but I was able to have my normal wing this weekend. There’s potential, and we even have the chance to make it to Q3, as Valtteri showed. And things are improving in the pits; we made three stops, and they were all clean.”
Valtteri Bottas had to retire after a mechanical issue and lamented a missed opportunity: “It was sudden, I lost power, the engine shut off, and the car stopped. We don’t yet know what it is; we need to investigate, but it’s disappointing because we were aiming for points. The pace was solid, there were many laps left, but we were struggling with Hülkenberg who finished in the points.”
