Alpine F1’s Despair: Ocon and Gasly Exit Gloomy

23/09/2024

Alpine F1’s woes deepen as Ocon and Gasly struggle in Singapore, finishing with spirits crushed and speeds unimproved.

Times are tough at Alpine F1. Esteban Ocon finished 13th in the Singapore Grand Prix after starting 15th, and the French driver lacks a clear explanation for the weekend’s underperformance, other than an overall lack of speed. He acknowledges a disappointment compared to the initial expectations before the weekend.

“We just didn’t have the pace on a regular basis, which is disappointing because we thought it would be better than previous weekends. But we lost the rhythm to Tsunoda who started ahead, and we finished far from Williams. We just didn’t have any grip. I hope we can come back with a more competitive car in Austin,” Ocon told Canal+.

“I think a lot of teams will bring updates to Austin with the break coming up; everyone will be able to work on their cars. We’ll continue on our side, but I don’t see what more we can do. It’s sad, but that’s the way it is.”

Pierre Gasly is no more upbeat than his teammate, and he too shows total defeatism: “What we tried was to stay out to block the others so that Esteban could catch up, but it was sacrificing me to finish last. We tried, but unfortunately, it didn’t work.”

“Fundamentally, the problem is that we’re just too slow, we find ourselves trying things that are… we ended up on mediums, and I was losing four seconds a lap. I really don’t have the words because these are things we need to address internally, but we are far too slow.”
