Despite its popularity and ties to Max Verstappen, Zandvoort’s F1 future hangs in balance due to contract negotiations and needed upgrades.
Circuit director Robert van Overdijk has stated that the circuit is undergoing modernization to meet the current standards of F1, particularly to address the narrow pit lane and small garages as much as possible.
“It was necessary,” he acknowledged. “I recall when Carlos Sainz ran over a wheel gun, and it suddenly became apparent: the pit lane is too narrow.”
“FOM and FIA have said, ‘If you wish to continue, you must do something.'”
However, the current contract for the Dutch GP is only valid until 2025 – and negotiations are now in full swing, reports van Overdijk.
When asked how it is going, he insists, “We are not an oil state where contracts can be extended for ten or twelve years. It will take us a few more months before we can make a decision because we need to ensure financing.”
“But it’s clear that FOM would like to keep coming here, and we are not making these modernization investments for the short term.”
