McLaren Wary as Mercedes Surges in F1 Championship

15/08/2024

McLaren’s Zak Brown highlights Mercedes’ impressive resurgence in the F1 championship race.

Mercedes F1 has advanced so significantly that it could pose a championship threat to McLaren, which itself aims to displace Red Bull Racing from the top spot unless Sergio Perez delivers a string of strong results after the break.

This insight was shared by Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren, when asked about the progress of the German manufacturer that supplies their engines.

“We aim to beat all nine teams. Ferrari is not far behind us, so I think they cannot be discounted. But yes, Mercedes is on pace, having won three of the last four races.”

“Fortunately, we have a lead of about a hundred points. We might need every one of those points if they continue on the path they’ve taken. I expect them to be very strong in the latter half of the year, so I’m glad we have some leeway.”

Following a prolonged period of Mercedes dominance, succeeded by Red Bull in recent years, Brown hopes this is the moment for his team to break that sequence.

“It’s very rewarding to see McLaren return to where it should be, alongside Red Bull, Ferrari, and Mercedes. Growing up in racing, it was always Ferrari, McLaren, and Williams at that time. So I think we are back to where people expect us to be. Now we just have to work hard to ensure we maintain this and push a bit further.”
