WRC Drivers Slam FIA Swearing Ban as Hakkinen Defends It

Swearing in Motorsport: WRC drivers unite against the FIA, Hakkinen defends it

25/02/2025

A fierce debate erupts as WRC drivers oppose the FIA’s swearing ban, while Mika Hakkinen insists F1 must set an example.

A highly popular former Formula 1 world champion has broken ranks to side with the FIA over its highly controversial “swearing ban.”

This strict crackdown, accompanied by new penalties that could even include race bans and championship points deductions, will apply to all FIA-sanctioned series—including WRC.

The rally drivers’ union (WoRDA), the equivalent of the GPDA for F1 drivers, has even issued a statement condemning the new rules as “unrealistic” and “unacceptable,” backed by the controversial FIA president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem.

The letter criticized “the severity of the penalties imposed for minor, isolated, and unintentional language infractions.”

It is believed that frantic behind-the-scenes negotiations involving F1 teams and Liberty Media could soften the new measures to ensure drivers remain free to express their emotions in the cockpit.

But two-time world champion Mika Hakkinen says he has no issue with the crackdown on swearing.

“Even if you can swear in ski jumping, skiing, football, and basketball, that doesn’t mean you can do it in Formula 1. I think F1 should set an example in every way.”

Hakkinen, 56, believes that while drivers may get frustrated, the audience watching and listening at home must also be considered.

“I would be very surprised if, say, a family with children is sitting at the table and their kids are constantly swearing, and the parents simply encourage them by saying, ‘Yes, swear more!’”

The Finn believes F1 drivers have a responsibility as role models.

“I refuse to believe that parents would teach their children to swear. Of course, if someone hits their thumb with a hammer, I understand that in that moment, a few choice words might slip out.”

“But I don’t think it’s terribly difficult to follow rules like these. Swearing doesn’t make you a tough guy. If and when drivers become role models for young people, wouldn’t it be better to move forward with the right vocabulary?”
