Wolff reveals Mercedes’ new driver, Antonelli, amidst communications snags.
It’s become an open secret: Mercedes F1 is set to appoint Andrea Kimi Antonelli as their lead driver for 2025.
Following unfruitful discussions over the summer regarding the Max Verstappen project, Toto Wolff has put that initiative on hold. An official announcement regarding Antonelli’s 2025 contract is anticipated at Monza in less than a week.
The Mercedes F1 director has inadvertently let the cat out of the bag, so why not confirm it now?
“I’m having issues with my communications team,” Wolff chuckled, “because I keep saying too much.”
“The announcement will be made soon, and Italy is a fitting place for that.”
Indeed, Antonelli, who turns 18 today, is Italian.
Might we see him in an F1 car before next year? Logan Sargeant made another significant blunder yesterday.
“James came to talk to me but this time I’m going to keep quiet. However, I believe he’s looking for an experienced driver. That’s what he managed to secure with Carlos. I’m not sure what he’ll do for the end of the season, but we have Mick, who is available and experienced,” Wolff added, trying to throw us off the scent with another quip.
“With Kimi, well, yes, we’ve done a lot of testing in Formula 1 with him. He has had a strong run in junior formulas and karting. In F2, his team is struggling a bit, and it’s very clear, you know, if the season goes well, he could have a chance in Formula 1. And if it doesn’t go well, I told him next year we’ll put him in the Renault Clio Cup!”
Is he not a bit disappointed about not managing to lure Verstappen? And what if he never succeeds in bringing him to Mercedes F1?
“I don’t think it’s a disappointment. Max is an excellent driver, but as I said yesterday, we need to focus on our drivers.”
“George is doing a fantastic job. Regardless of who is in the second car, well you have an idea, we will concentrate on him and not think about what might happen in the future. I would like it to work with George and… the new driver.”
