Toto Wolff believes Mick Schumacher never got a fair chance in Formula 1, urging the young driver to focus on racing success.
Mick Schumacher “never truly had the chance” to show what he could do in Formula 1.
This is the regret expressed by Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff, who hired the son of the legendary Michael Schumacher as a reserve driver for 2023 and 2024 after his racing career ended at Haas F1.
Mercedes confirmed in Qatar that Schumacher, 25, “chose” to leave this role after next weekend’s finale in Abu Dhabi. However, it is also likely that he will be replaced by former team driver Valtteri Bottas in 2025.
The young German will now focus on the WEC with Alpine, particularly at Le Mans.
“He is a very good young man with the right values,” Wolff said in Qatar. “He is very intelligent, but unfortunately, he never truly had his chance in Formula 1 with the right environment.”
Wolff believes Schumacher made “a very wise decision” in stepping away from the F1 paddock for now.
“He has reached a point where constant waiting no longer makes sense, and now he wants to race. He will certainly do so with great success.”
