Toto Wolff recalls Hamilton’s iconic 2018 Singapore pole lap, a masterclass that silenced critics and showcased unparalleled driving brilliance.

Lewis Hamilton has experienced numerous highlights during his 12 seasons with Mercedes F1. Team boss Toto Wolff admits to holding fond memories of the 2018 Singapore Grand Prix and the Briton’s pole lap, despite Hamilton missing the start of the weekend’s preparations.

“You know, over these 12 years, there have been so many exceptional moments from a racing perspective,” Wolff said. “Emotionally, I think back to the 2018 race in Singapore, where everyone criticized us for letting him do his fashion shows.”

“He arrived late on Thursday to one of the engineering meetings, and I said, ‘You can’t train performance!’ And then he humiliated everyone else in qualifying with an incredible lap, maybe comparable to Senna in Monaco, and disappeared into the distance during the race.”

“That was a huge, huge moment. And emotionally, we’ve had so many great moments off the track, less visible to the media, which I’ll cherish forever.”

Among other memories, Wolff recalls a diving contest with his two drivers, which was cut short by the instructor, worried they were becoming too competitive: “We were diving together with George [Russell].”

“It was hilarious when the diving coach said, ‘I have to stop you two now because this is getting too competitive.’ Meter by meter, we were trying to outdo each other, and it became dangerous. We said, ‘Stop!’ Yes, those were great moments.”

Wolff also amusingly remembers Hamilton convincing him to go vegan—for 18 hours. “Then there are [memories of] dinners in Monaco,” he added.
