Mercedes F1 Soars in Spain, Sets Sights on Austria

26/06/2024

Mercedes F1’s surge in Spain boosts confidence ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix.

Mercedes F1 was looking for confirmation of its progress in Spain, Barcelona, on a benchmark circuit and that’s exactly what the German team achieved, according to Toto Wolff.

The director of Mercedes F1 is thus pleased to see that his team is indeed heading in the right direction to continue, this weekend, with the Austrian Grand Prix, a Sprint format race.

“We knew Barcelona would be a good indicator of our recent progress. The team worked hard to improve the W15 on circuits with a wide range of cornering speeds, like Barcelona,” comments the Austrian.

“These incremental gains helped us build on the momentum from Montreal. Although we didn’t have the ultimate pace to compete for the victory, it was encouraging to be in the mix.”

“Lewis secured a well-deserved podium and George managed his last stint well to take 4th place. We left the weekend with good points, but we know there is still work to be done to have a realistic chance of fighting for the win. This work continues and we are on a positive trajectory.”

F1 heads to Wolff’s home country, but also to Red Bull’s turf, at Spielberg.

“We go to Austria intending to continue these positive improvements. It’s a very different circuit from last weekend. There are many low and medium-speed turns, punctuated by longer straights.”

“This will pose another challenge and a benchmark for our car. The top group in the pack is tight and we will need to be at our best to compete again for the podium.”
