Carlos Sainz’s switch to Williams F1 proves justified as Albon’s P6 finish highlights the team’s progress and potential for the 2024 season.
Williams F1 lived up to expectations following a promising winter testing session in Bahrain. Alexander Albon delivered an impressive performance, securing 6th place on the grid for the Australian Grand Prix, while Carlos Sainz qualified in 10th.
The only disappointment for the Grove-based team? Yuki Tsunoda stole the spotlight, unexpectedly emerging as the best of the rest in Melbourne.
“Our goal was to be in the top 10, so finishing P6 is fantastic. I’m really happy,” Albon said with a smile after the season’s first qualifying session.
“We have a great car—it’s easy to drive, predictable, and much more manageable this year. The midfield battle is incredibly tight, but this is a strong start for us.”
“Honestly, I don’t even think qualifying is our strongest point. The biggest improvement we’ve made is in race pace.”
“We’ve put in some serious work at Grove. We’ve prepared well, started the season at the right weight, and are in a much better place than we were a year ago. Comparing where we were then to now, it’s a completely different story. I’m incredibly proud of the team, and the atmosphere is fantastic.”
“Tomorrow, we’re expecting rain. No one has tested on intermediates or wet tires yet, so it will be interesting to see how things play out.”
Sainz Confident in His Move to Williams F1
Despite qualifying behind his teammate, Carlos Sainz is already reassured about his decision to join Williams F1 over Alpine or Sauber.
“Yes, absolutely. Maybe this was just the way things were meant to be.”
“Now, it’s all about hard work. I see a lot of potential in this team, and I know there’s plenty I can extract from myself too. With Williams providing full support and having all the right tools in place, I feel like we’re on the right track.”
“I’m really happy and proud of the team. The way we’ve progressed over the winter and built a car capable of reaching Q3 with both drivers for the first time in years—it’s an incredible achievement.”
“And I believe it’s only going to get better. There’s still a lot of potential for me to unlock once I figure out how to maximize performance in Q3.”
“I was strong in testing and throughout the weekend, but when it came to Q3, I struggled to find the extra lap time and made a few mistakes. That’s something I need to work on.”
Vowles Optimistic About Williams’ Prospects
Williams team principal James Vowles was also pleased with the team’s performance but believes there was still more to achieve. With rain on the horizon, he remains hopeful for a strong race day.
“What a fantastic day for the team. I’m really happy for Alex—he delivered a great lap and stepped up when it mattered.”
“I’m a little disappointed for Carlos because we know there was more to gain, but our execution wasn’t quite perfect. The good news is that we have strong starting positions, and with unpredictable weather coming, there will be plenty of opportunities. The team is full of energy and ready for the challenge.”
As Williams gears up for race day, all eyes are on Albon and Sainz to see if they can convert their promising grid positions into a strong result. And with rain looming, anything is possible.
