Williams Racing has announced its commitment to using Mercedes engines until at least 2030, extending a partnership originally set to conclude with the advent of Formula 1’s new era in 2026. Team Principal James Vowles, who played a pivotal role at Mercedes from 2010 to 2022, expressed great satisfaction with the decision to continue the alliance with Mercedes.
The collaboration with Mercedes began at the onset of the hybrid era in 2014, a fruitful period for Williams. Notably, the British team secured third-place finishes in the Constructors’ Championship in both 2014 and 2015. However, the team faced challenging times beginning in 2018, enduring three consecutive years at the bottom of the standings and failing to score points in both 2019 and 2020. A turning point came in 2021 at the Hungarian Grand Prix, where Nicholas Latifi and George Russell earned points for Williams, marking a significant comeback.
Under the leadership of Vowles, the 2023 season saw a resurgence for Williams, accumulating 28 points and signaling a positive trajectory in collaboration with Mercedes. The continuation of their partnership post-2026, given Mercedes’ status as an eight-time Constructors’ Champion, is not unexpected. “We have enjoyed a long-standing partnership with Mercedes-Benz and are excited to extend this into the next era of Formula 1,” stated Vowles in a Williams press release.
Vowles Emphasizes Williams-Mercedes Synergy
Vowles, who transitioned from Mercedes to Williams last year, highlighted the synergy between Mercedes’ expertise, support, and technology and Williams’ medium and long-term ambitions. Toto Wolff, Mercedes’ Team Principal, also commended the partnership. “This announcement underscores the strength of Mercedes-Benz’s offerings in Formula 1 and not only confirms but also reinforces our overall motorsport strategy,” said Toto Wolff.
