Williams’ Mexican Strategy Crumbles After Albon’s Early Crash

Williams F1 Left Frustrated as Mexico Ends in Costly Crash

Williams F1’s Mexican Grand Prix saw frustrations mount after Alex Albon’s early crash dashed their points-scoring ambitions.

Sven Smeets, the sporting director of Williams F1, has disclosed the strategic plan that the Grove-based team had laid out for Mexico—a plan that was ultimately derailed by Alex Albon’s accident before the first corner.

“As we did last week, we decided to split the cars on different tyres at the start, with Alex on the medium compound and Franco on the hards,” Smeets explained following the Mexican Grand Prix.

“Unfortunately, Alex’s race was over before it even began after he got caught up under braking into Turn 1 by Gasly and Tsunoda, which led to an immediate retirement. There was nothing Alex could have done to avoid the incident, which is disappointing for him, especially given he was in a prime position to fight for points.”

The Belgian commended Franco Colapinto’s efforts despite the lack of points: “Franco put in a good race, but sadly couldn’t break into the top 10 for points and had to settle for 12th place after some hard-fought battles with other cars on track.”

“A difficult and frustrating afternoon for the team, especially knowing the car had the pace to contend for points. We now shift our full focus to Brazil, which will be the second sprint race of this triple-header.”
