Williams F1’s Disappointing Sprint Qualifiers in Shanghai

19/04/2024

Williams F1 faced challenges in Shanghai, failing to advance past SQ1, with bleak prospects for the Sprint.

It’s somewhat gloomy at Williams F1: the team couldn’t escape SQ1 this Friday in Shanghai.

Alexander Albon clocked the 18th time and Logan Sargeant the last. The only positive point for the team: this time, no car hit a wall!

“It was a tough session,” admits Alexander Albon.

“We were the first cars out, so the track was still very green, which damaged the tires. We tried to do a second lap at the end of QS1, but the tires were worn and we had no grip. I don’t know if QS2 was possible today, but I think there was potential to be in a better position than we are. We will treat the Sprint race as a learning session for the car ahead of qualifying.”

Logan Sargeant, who will start last tomorrow, also speaks of “mixed feelings.”

“Like in Japan, I feel I did a good job, but unfortunately, it put me at the back of the grid. It felt like there was a bit more in the car, but I’m sure everyone can say the same. The track was extremely slippery today, with little grip, making things difficult. We have homework to do tonight.”

“What’s good is that the Parc Fermé will be open again after the Sprint race, allowing us to change some things. We’ll use the Sprint to draw lessons for Sunday’s race and, of course, to figure out what we can do better in tomorrow’s qualifying.”
