Albon’s Brazil Hopes Shattered After Heavy Qualifying Crash

Williams drivers Albon and Colapinto crash out in Brazil, their hopes dashed amid wet, treacherous conditions at the Interlagos circuit.

The qualifying session for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix was marked by several incidents, including those involving the Williams F1 drivers, on a rain-soaked Interlagos track that proved treacherously slippery. Alex Albon crashed at the end of the pit straight, damaging the rear of his FW46.

He posted the seventh-fastest time in Q3, which would have secured him a fourth-row start, and was even running second at the time of his accident. Speaking to Viaplay, he admitted that the damage was too severe for him to compete in the race: “It’s over, there’s no chance. No chance.”

In a follow-up interview with F1 TV, Albon elaborated on the mechanical issue that led to his crash, but remained downbeat about his prospects: “I know we had a problem… The moment I pressed the brake pedal, I heard a beep in my ear.”

“That usually signals a failure. The rear locked up, and then there was a big crash. It means we’re out of the race, unfortunately. No, it won’t be repaired.”

Franco Colapinto also crashed, hitting the barrier at Turn 3, though his Williams appeared to sustain less damage. Nevertheless, he was visibly upset by the incident, admitting that he hadn’t anticipated the loss of control that ended his session.

“I’m fine. I slid, lost the rear in a very aggressive way, and couldn’t recover the car. It was my first time driving in the rain, and I made a mistake. I’m sorry for the guys—they’ll have a job to get me ready for the race. I’m sorry,” said the frustrated Argentinian.
