Alex Albon doesn’t think he could really do better than his 14th place in qualifying at the Chinese Grand Prix. The Williams F1 driver explains that the Shanghai track does not suit the characteristics of the FW46.
“The weekend has been difficult so far; 14th place was probably the best result we could achieve today,” said Albon. “Our car struggles with the long corners of this circuit, and the mix of high and low-speed corners makes the settings challenging.”
“We had to prioritize the low-speed corners, thus compromising high-speed stability. The wind also affected the balance and gave the car a feeling of disconnection.”
“Today has clarified the areas we need to work on, and the team can be proud of the changes made before the session. I am optimistic because we have a good tire allocation for the race, and the winds should be lighter.”
Logan Sargeant unfortunately distinguished himself again by going off the track, though fortunately without seriousness, and he will start last: “Qualifying was frustrating because it was a good lap until the spin. The car was on the edge of speed this afternoon, particularly over bumps and tarmac changes. Nevertheless, the session could have been much better.”
“We used the Sprint as an opportunity to do a good long run and, from there, we made some minor changes before qualifying based on what we felt and what we want for tomorrow. So we have to see how that plays out in the race. In reality, it won’t be easy, but we will do our best and see where that takes us.”
