Albon prepares for a tight race with Sainz, as Williams F1 rejects traditional team orders.
Alex Albon is unconcerned about the need for Williams F1 to establish a hierarchy and directives next year, as he welcomes Carlos Sainz as his teammate. Over three seasons, he has only competed against Logan Sargeant and Nicholas Latifi in the team, and the prospect of a more competitive teammate does not intimidate him.
“I don’t think we can afford to play a hierarchy,” Albon told Crash.net. “We’re here to score points. It’s very tight. I don’t think we will be among the top teams next year. So, we need to ensure that both cars are performing.”
“That comes down to making sure we are in a good position within the team to have two drivers who will fight. I think we will be very close to each other. He’s a highly regarded driver and it will be fantastic to compete against him.”
“We just need to make sure that we are in a good position within the team to have two drivers who are battling. I think we will be very close to each other. He’s a highly regarded driver and it will be fantastic to compete against him. We just need to make sure that we have the foundations to support him.”
The Thai driver believes the experience of the current Ferrari driver will be crucial for Williams, as he recalls his own following his stint with Red Bull. He reveals that he has known for a long time that his team was targeting the recruitment of the Spaniard.
“It wasn’t unexpected. I know that James [Vowles] was very keen to have Carlos at the start of the season. It’s fantastic. What I find most exciting is that when I think about my move from Red Bull to Williams, there is so much I learned at Red Bull.”
“I was able to jump into a Williams and know immediately what my weaknesses were, my strengths, the areas I needed to focus on and those I could almost ignore and spend my time on other things. I think with Carlos’s arrival, he will bring so much experience, especially with this new generation of cars, he will know where the weaknesses are.”
“I have spent two and a half, almost three years now, driving the Williams in this generation of car. I have my own ideas about our weaknesses and what is not. Carlos comes with the experience of Ferrari, which will be very valuable. I am sure that when he arrives, we will do a brain dump and we will ask him everything.”
Albon does not want to compare himself to his future teammate, as he believes they need to work together: “It’s not for me to make comparisons. That’s what the media does.”
“I focus on myself. I like challenges. I think it’s a good thing to have Carlos on the team. I think we will learn a lot from each other. It’s an exciting experience.”
