Williams F1 Set for 2025 Breakthrough - Montoya Dismisses Aston

Montoya Backs Williams as 2025 Surprise, Doubts Aston’s Focus

02/02/2025

Montoya predicts Williams’ resurgence, warning Aston Martin’s focus may already be shifting toward 2026, leaving room for surprises.

Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya believes Williams will be the “biggest surprise” of the year but has issued a warning to Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz.

Williams endured a poor 2024 season, which saw the Grove-based team drop to ninth in the constructors’ standings.

Last year was marred by a mid-season driver change after Franco Colapinto was promoted to replace Logan Sargeant. While Colapinto initially performed well, he struggled in the latter stages of the season, costing Williams heavily due to several major crashes.

Despite a difficult season, the team heads into 2025 with Sainz alongside Albon, a strong pairing on paper expected to deliver results, although much will depend on the FW47.

Montoya foresees a good year for his former team, unlike Aston Martin F1, which the Colombian suspects will shift focus to the new 2026 regulations.

“I think Aston Martin F1 will put all its eggs in the 2026 basket.”

“They’ll make some progress for the 2025 season, but I believe their main focus is 2026. Aston Martin has to play the long game.”

“I think Williams will be the biggest surprise of 2025. Alex Albon and Franco Colapinto didn’t finish last season perfectly, but with Carlos Sainz, they can do better.”

“It will be interesting to see if Williams can match the performance levels of drivers like Albon and Sainz; otherwise, they could consider moving on.”
