Robson’s Verdict: Frustration and Valor at Saudi GP

11/03/2024

Dave Robson reflects on Williams F1’s challenging Saudi GP, praising Albon and Sargeant’s efforts amid adversity.

Robson, Williams F1’s Head of Performance, did not mince words regarding his team’s lack of success in Saudi Arabia, while he praised the effort put in by his drivers, especially Alex Albon.

“It was an incredibly frustrating race in Jeddah,” said Robson.

“Alex got off to a fantastic start, overtaking Bearman’s Ferrari but then found himself stuck in traffic at the first corner and, crucially, lost a position to Magnussen.”

The engineer commended Sargeant despite a challenging end to the race: “Logan drove well today and was in the same group of cars as Alex for the majority of the race.”

“His pace was solid, but he experienced a slightly higher tyre degradation than Alex in the last stint. Although we’re frustrated to have finished just outside the points, there are positives, including the baseline race pace of the FW46.”

“We’ve learned a lot over the past few weeks in the Middle East, and the team can now head back to Europe before going to Australia for the championship’s third round. Melbourne is always one of the season’s highlights, and we’re looking forward to continuing the work done in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.”
