Williams F1: Sargeant Edged Out of Q2, Albon Laments Tire Woes

04/05/2024

In a challenging Miami qualifying, Logan Sargeant missed Q2 narrowly, while Alex Albon faced tire issues, highlighting Williams F1’s struggles with strategy and performance under the searing track conditions.

Logan Sargeant qualified 17th in Miami and did not make it past Q1, but he was very close to moving into Q2, finishing just a tenth behind his teammate, Alex Albon.

However, the tight margins of modern F1 meant that Albon could advance to Q2, but not the American, who was visibly frustrated at home.

“When I look at yesterday, I knew we had the pace to make it into Q2 and I wanted to achieve that today.”

“We executed our running plan well but it’s not easy when it’s extremely tight with a tenth separating several cars.”

“I’m honestly happy with the changes we made to the car between sessions and how I drove.”

“We’re going to try to have another good race tomorrow by seizing all the opportunities that come our way.”

“We have the pace and the straight-line speed to keep a lot of people behind us, so we need to take a good track position, right from the start if possible, to make the most of it.”

Alex Albon will start 14th.

“Today, it was more about tires than anything else. Even now, during my qualifying laps, I have to do a lot of management with the tires and it’s like the faster you start your lap, the slower you finish it.”

“The hot track temperatures seem to hurt us a bit more when we use less downforce for better straight-line speed, so at turn 11, the tires were gone.”

“I locked up the brakes in the turn when the front tires had already said ‘stop,’ and then it was the rear tires in the next turn. It’s just a bit tricky. Let’s see what we can do from 14th place tomorrow.”
