Williams F1 Falters in Imola Qualifying

18/05/2024

Williams F1 struggled with changing track conditions in Imola, leading to Albon qualifying 14th and Sargeant starting last. The team hopes for better weather during the race.

Alex Albon qualified 14th on the grid at Imola with his Williams F1.

The Thai driver had hoped for a bit better, as the FW46 seemed competitive on this circuit. That was before the conditions changed during qualifying…

“All weekend, the car felt good, with the balance where we wanted it, but before qualifying, the track changed significantly for me. Before FP3, we tried some positive minor differences with the setup, but during qualifying, the wind picked up and the tires overheated, so I lost a lot of lap time in the last two corners.”

“It’s not ideal, but I’m overall satisfied with my lap because I thought I would be eliminated in Q1, seeing how much the car changed for me between sessions.”

“The race will be tricky if I still struggle in those last corners, so I hope the weather will be in our favor tomorrow.”

Logan Sargeant will start from last position. He had set a competitive time in Q1, but it was deleted for exceeding track limits.

“So far, the weekend has been tough. The wind changed over the two days, and the track was reset before qualifying as there was a bit less grip than in FP3, which surprised everyone, including me.”

“Not every weekend is easy, but this track in particular poses a lot of challenges – it’s an old-school track with bumps, it’s tight, and the margins are fine. Nevertheless, we’ve held up well, and I’ve improved session by session. I’m focusing on doing my best, and we’ll maximize everything we can tomorrow.”
