Albon battled tyre issues while Colapinto’s pessimism grew after a tough Sprint Qualifying session, leaving Williams F1 with challenges ahead in Qatar.
Alex Albon set the 12th fastest time in Sprint Qualifying for the Qatar Grand Prix, and the Williams F1 driver is not unhappy with his position, though he remains less optimistic ahead of the Sprint. At least he had fun on the Losail circuit.
“It’s a great track, really fun and very fast. But I’m a bit disappointed, I don’t think the tyres are in the right window. We had this issue in Free Practice as well, and several teams are struggling with it. But it’s okay, our pace is good and it was solid on the long runs, so I’m optimistic,” said Albon.
“Last year, we finished in seventh, but we were on mediums and they were on softs, and I don’t think anyone will make that mistake again. We won’t surprise anyone. But I think the pace will be very strong.”
Franco Colapinto unfortunately was eliminated in SQ1 with the 20th and last fastest time. The Argentine driver struggled with having an older specification on his car: “We were struggling right from Free Practice.”
“I was losing time in every corner, and it’s a compromise because I was losing time everywhere. There was nothing to find in any particular place. I had a lot of trouble finding balance. At the moment, we’re not finding our direction, but hopefully we can do something more interesting for tomorrow.”
“Of course, there are always things to improve the time. But we’re still in a tough situation with the car, especially with the parts I have. There are still things to change, but it’s not very promising.”
