Williams F1 Engages Newey in Preliminary Talks

Williams F1 Engages Newey in Preliminary Talks

03/05/2024

Williams F1’s James Vowles confirms early discussions with Adrian Newey, sparking future possibilities.

James Vowles, the team principal of Williams F1, has responded to speculations that his team had reached out to Adrian Newey.

In Miami, Vowles confirmed that this was indeed the case and that he would love to bring Newey back to the British Formula 1 team. However, he emphasized that these were very light conversations so far, not negotiations.

“I spoke to Adrian after the announcement of his departure from Red Bull. It was more of a light conversation than anything else. We discussed how it must not have been an easy decision to leave Red Bull.”

When asked what he thinks Williams can offer to the designer, Vowles was clear.

“I think we are a team without too much politics. We’re a small team trying to find our way back to the front. And I think that’s a very good situation for someone who wants to take on such a challenge.”

“What’s great about Williams is that it has maintained a family atmosphere. We are not driven by a manufacturer (a factory team). We are driven by a group of individuals who want to be here. And it’s all about racing. And I hope that highlights our strengths.”

Every team would want Newey’s expertise, Vowles knows.

“There isn’t a team he hasn’t been with, like McLaren, ourselves, and Red Bull, where he hasn’t made a difference. And I think everyone here would be foolish not to at least have a conversation with him at this stage. It would be unprofessional not to make contact with him.”

“Then, of course, it will be his choice.”
