Williams F1 reveals substantial damage to Alexander Albon’s FW46 following the Miami GP.
Williams F1 today disclosed that Alexander Albon severely damaged the floor of his FW46 at the end of the Miami Grand Prix.
Williams sustained more damage to its cars than initially apparent in Miami as Albon destroyed his floor on the same part of the track where Max Verstappen went off earlier in the race, taking a cone with him.
“On lap 50, Alex went through the same area as Verstappen, where he hit the marker, and he broke the floor on the support of this marker which remained anchored in the asphalt.”
“The damage was enormous,” adds team principal James Vowles.
“We didn’t realize how significant it was immediately, but just a lap later, we saw very clearly how important it was. It was about a second per lap in performance, just to give everyone an idea.”
“This contributed to Alex’s subsequent error when he locked his wheels and went off the track.”
“When he braked, there was almost no downforce left to stop the car. A piece must have come off a bit earlier. He was then in 11th place, hence our frustration.”
For his part, Albon has already put that race behind him.
“I’m ready to start at Imola. To be honest, this weekend in Miami, we never really had the pace.”
“On Friday, if we hadn’t had a problem with the car during the sprint qualifying, we might have had a chance in the sprint with all that chaos. But in the race, with our pace, I don’t think I could have finished in the top 10 even without that final error.”
