Albon Targets Sprint Points After Strong SQ3 Performance

01/11/2024

Alex Albon secures SQ3, positioning Williams F1 for a potential sprint race showdown against Alpine and Pierre Gasly.

Alex Albon reached SQ3 at the São Paulo Grand Prix in Brazil, underscoring Williams F1’s strong form despite recent disappointments for the driver. However, he believes he could have achieved more than ninth place and hopes for a strong showing in the Sprint, with Pierre Gasly and his Alpine starting just ahead.

“I’m a bit disappointed with this ninth place, as I think we could have been a bit higher today,” Albon admitted. “The tyres are so delicate that it’s crucial to hit the exact window here. Tyre degradation will be significant tomorrow.”

“We still need to understand the soft tyre a bit better, but our race pace seems strong enough, so it should make for an interesting Sprint race. We’re just outside the points, so we’ll see what we can achieve from there.”

Franco Colapinto, who was eliminated in SQ2, shared insights into the challenges he faced: “It was great to get into the car today; it’s my first time driving on the Interlagos circuit here in São Paulo.”

“The afternoon was quite challenging in Sprint qualifying. In Q1, the tyres took a long time to hit the window, and my Q2 wasn’t a clean lap, with times incredibly close.”

“We’ll see what we can do tomorrow, as there’s still plenty to play for this weekend. Over the last two days, I’ve been truly impressed by the support I’ve received here and by the fans who have come out to watch the race, which has created a fantastic atmosphere.”
