Williams will focus on small updates in 2025, keeping their full development effort and resources locked on the crucial 2026 season.
Williams F1 has kicked off the 2025 season in surprisingly competitive form, with the FW47 giving the team a real chance of securing fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship.
However, the team will not throw everything into this year’s fight. Team Principal James Vowles has made it clear that 2026 remains the top priority. Any updates to the current car will be limited to what he calls “quick fixes” rather than major developments.
One of the FW47’s biggest weaknesses is handling in slow corners, a flaw highlighted by Carlos Sainz during the Jeddah Grand Prix and confirmed by Alex Albon.
When asked about these concerns, Vowles explained, “There are still aspects of the car that are not where they need to be. I do not think we have the right balance for our drivers, and we are a bit restricted by the tools we currently have.”
He added, “The great thing with Carlos is that he and Alex are completely aligned. It gives us a clear direction for improvements.”
Vowles stressed that the feedback from both drivers is constructive and not a way to deflect criticism. “Sometimes, teams face issues when drivers use complaints as distractions. That is not happening here. Both Carlos and Alex are very clear about where the weaknesses are.”
“There are some areas we can improve this season, but some of the deeper issues require a change in long-term direction,” he continued.
When asked why the car’s handling is such a big challenge, Vowles said, “Our balance simply is not where it needs to be for the drivers to fully exploit the car. It is a difficult car to drive.”
He admitted that while some improvements are coming, there will be no complete fix this year. “We have a set of quick fixes we can apply now. That is a positive because it shows we are targeting the right problems. It means we are pulling the right levers, and to fix them properly, we need to continue focusing on the core issues.”
“But I do not believe we can completely resolve everything in 2025. There will be nothing more than quick fixes. The main focus remains firmly set on 2026.”
