Will Komatsu’s Review Boost Haas F1’s Future Performance

Can Haas F1 Overcome Operational Flaws After Brazil?

06/11/2024

Haas F1 reflects on operational flaws after Brazil, seeking improvement to reclaim competitive edge in the season’s final races.

Just days after securing sixth place from RB F1, the Haas team lost this same position to Alpine. Ayao Komatsu, director of the American outfit, shared the disappointment this represents and outlined the challenges his team faced at Interlagos, with Oliver Bearman finishing 12th and Nico Hülkenberg disqualified.

“It was an incredibly tough day for the team; we didn’t perform well in the race while others scored significant points,” Komatsu said. “Operationally, we didn’t optimise everything in Brazil, so it’s something we need to learn from and review.”

“A slight positive was Ollie’s pace on intermediates — and part of the race with Nico — which was actually better than we’d anticipated, so it’s a small encouragement to see that we can improve our relative performance with these tyres.”

Despite losing sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship, Haas still has hope of overtaking Alpine, as the French team typically performs less effectively in more traditional, dry conditions.

“We need to look ahead to the final three races. We have decent pace in dry conditions, so we’ll refocus after a brief pause to make the most of the car and everyone involved for the upcoming events, with the aim of reclaiming sixth place in the championship.”
