Max Verstappen isn’t just leading on track, behind the scenes, his influence over Red Bull’s driver decisions is just as powerful.
Max Verstappen isn’t just Red Bull’s top driver, he’s also got serious influence behind the scenes. According to former Red Bull operations chief Richard Hopkins, the reigning World Champion has a say in who shares the garage with him. In fact, his contract reportedly gives him the power to approve or block potential teammates.
One recent example? Verstappen was initially against the idea of swapping Liam Lawson in for Yuki Tsunoda mid-season. While Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko admitted Max was unhappy with the plan, the Dutchman eventually agreed to go with the team’s decision.
Hopkins revealed that this influence dates back to the end of 2018, when Daniel Ricciardo left the team. Since then, Verstappen has steadily grown into his role as the undisputed No.1 driver — and with that status comes leverage.
“Red Bull isn’t interested in hiring a clear number two,” Hopkins explained. “But make no mistake — Max wants the team built around him. He doesn’t need a teammate challenging his position.”
Still, Hopkins acknowledged that there’s value in having two strong drivers. He pointed to McLaren’s recent resurgence as an example, where Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri push each other — and the whole team — to raise their game.
“Having that kind of internal competition can really drive progress,” he said. “And while Max has the right — officially or unofficially — to influence who sits in the other car, it’s not about keeping someone weaker by his side.”
“In fact, he might even prefer a faster, more talented teammate than what he’s had lately. He clearly saw Lawson as someone with more long-term potential than Tsunoda. But right now, Red Bull can’t afford to wait around and develop someone from scratch — not when the team’s performance is under pressure.”
