Fernando Alonso warns that despite Aston Martin’s elite lineup and top facilities, Formula 1 success can’t be rushed or bought like football.
In Formula 1, assembling a group of top-tier talent and cutting-edge infrastructure doesn’t always guarantee victory. And no one understands that better than Fernando Alonso.
As Aston Martin continues to build a world-class team, complete with a state-of-the-art factory, a brand-new wind tunnel, and even talks of bringing in design legend Adrian Newey, questions are swirling: is this the formula for success?
One key figure, Enrico Cardile, is still on Ferrari’s leash until at least July. But the foundations are in place.
For Alonso, the ingredients are there—but turning them into a winning recipe will take time. Speaking candidly, the two-time world champion compared Formula 1 to football, emphasizing that unlike on the pitch, success in F1 can’t be bought.
“I think the Aston Martin package is now complete,” said Alonso. “But we need time.”
“This isn’t football. In football, you pick the best stadium, the best manager, the best players, and more often than not—you win the next game.”
“In F1, even with the best facilities and the best people, success still takes time. History has shown us that over and over.”
Alonso: No Shortcuts to Victory
Alonso believes Aston Martin has what it takes: talent, technology, and ambition. But he knows the clock won’t be rushed.
“Compared to the top teams, we’re not missing anything—equipment, staff, ideas—it’s all there. But we still need time to bring it all together.”
“I hope 2025 gives us enough learning to properly prepare for 2026. That lines up with the new regulations, but nothing is guaranteed.”
He’s also quick to acknowledge that Aston Martin isn’t alone in chasing glory.
“In F1, there are many great teams with top resources who still don’t win. Everyone’s operating at such a high level now, you need to find that extra edge.”
“That’s what we’re aiming for—closing the gap, as quickly as possible.”
