Sauber Wins Battle for Wheatley in Red Bull Showdown

Wheatley Takes the Helm at Sauber Sooner Than Expected

12/03/2025

Sauber secured Jonathan Wheatley’s early arrival as team principal, ending a tense standoff with Red Bull over his notice period.

The wait is over—Jonathan Wheatley will officially step in as Sauber’s team principal on April 1, 2025.

Initially announced for the role last August, Wheatley’s move from Red Bull faced delays as both teams haggled over his notice period. Red Bull wanted to keep him on until the end of 2025, but after months of negotiations, an agreement was reached, allowing him to start much earlier than anticipated.

His debut on the Sauber pit wall is set for the Japanese Grand Prix, where he’ll lead the race team alongside Mattia Binotto, who oversees technical and operational aspects from the factory.

Both Wheatley and Binotto will report directly to Gernot Döllner, chairman of Sauber Motorsport AG / Audi F1.

With this key leadership piece in place, Sauber is gearing up for a new era—faster than expected.
