Lewis Hamilton faces growing doubts from F1 insiders as concerns mount over his loss of pace and confidence this season.
Questions are starting to pile up around Lewis Hamilton’s performance. Former F1 team principals are openly wondering what is happening to the seven-time world champion.
Günther Steiner, the former Haas F1 boss, believes Hamilton’s struggles are becoming more and more worrying. He fears that Hamilton might be losing the inner confidence that has carried him through so many battles, setting him up for a very tough year.
“It is becoming a real concern in my opinion,” Steiner said on the Red Flags podcast. “What worries me more is when he asks where he is losing time. Sure, an engineer can show you where you are slower on the data, but they cannot make you feel why it is happening.”
“It is something you have to figure out for yourself. The real danger is if Lewis loses his confidence, because then you are racing backwards. That is the biggest worry for me. How are they going to fix this? Honestly, I have no idea.”
Another former team principal, Giancarlo Minardi, also expressed surprise at Hamilton’s struggles, especially after seeing the gap to Charles Leclerc during the race in Jeddah.
“You have to give credit to Leclerc for his Grand Prix,” Minardi said.
“Not only did he deliver Ferrari’s first podium of the season, but he also masked the deeper issues with the car that Hamilton, unfortunately, made very visible. His pace just did not look like that of a seven-time world champion. Right now, it is pretty hard to explain.”
