F1 Teams Test Pirelli Tyres in Rain at Silverstone

10/07/2024

Rain disrupts first day of Pirelli’s F1 tyre tests at Silverstone, with teams missing out on dry conditions.

Yesterday marked the start of the sixth development test of the year for Pirelli’s F1 tyres.

Following sessions in Barcelona, Jerez de la Frontera, Le Castellet, and Mugello, this week, the Formula 1 tyre supplier remained in the UK, on the same circuit that hosted Sunday’s British Grand Prix.

Three teams are in action, all based within a 130-kilometer radius of the circuit: McLaren ran Mick Schumacher (reserve driver for Mercedes F1 and McLaren), Alexander Albon drove for Williams, and Haas F1 called on Pietro Fittipaldi.

The testing program was set to focus on finalizing the construction of the 2025 tyres, while continuing the development of compounds, which, given the challenging nature of the circuit, involved examining the hardest solutions.

Unfortunately, the weather made the use of dry weather tyres impossible, and the program therefore shifted towards exploring new solutions for intermediate tyres, also comparing their behavior with and without tyre warmers.

In total, 201 laps were completed, 53 by Schumacher (fastest lap 1’37”428), 86 by Albon (1’41″116), and 62 by Fittipaldi (1’42″124).

The testing session will continue this Wednesday with Lando Norris (McLaren), Logan Sargeant (Williams), and Oliver Bearman (Haas).
