Mark Webber acknowledges Piastri’s struggles against Norris but remains optimistic about his progress and potential for the upcoming F1 season.
Former F1 driver Mark Webber does not say whether McLaren and his protégé Oscar Piastri could head into the 2025 season as favorites.
“Is McLaren the favorite this season? We’ll see!” said the Australian, who now personally manages his 23-year-old compatriot, speaking to RTBF on the first day of pre-season testing in Bahrain on Wednesday.
“There are so many factors at play… It’s crucial that the car is competitive on every track and, above all, reliable, given that we start with five races in six weeks. But we’re obviously building on a strong foundation because the car was very good in 2024.”
As for Piastri, he remains highly regarded in the F1 paddock, though there is no denying that Norris had the upper hand last season.
“He had an incredible second year in Formula 1, even if he was outpaced by Lando Norris at the end of the season. But in the end, 2024 was a fantastic year for him with a lot of points scored. He learned a lot, and I hope he has a strong season.”
RTBF concluded its interview with Webber by addressing one of the hottest topics in the paddock: Ferrari’s new driver pairing.
“Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc at Ferrari? What a combo, it’s fantastic for the sport. Lewis’s move is great for everyone. As for Leclerc, he’s a superstar, and I have huge respect for both of them. It’s all positive, both for Ferrari and for F1.”
