F1 drivers receive warnings for overtaking maneuvers after the race under yellow flag rules.
Max Verstappen and Three Other F1 Drivers Merely Warned Following Stewards’ Inquiry Post Azerbaijan Grand Prix
Max Verstappen was among a quartet of drivers who responded to an allegation of overtaking under the conditions of a virtual safety car after the chequered flag at the Baku city circuit. Nico Hulkenberg and the Alpine F1 duo, Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly, were the other three summoned.
The virtual safety car had been deployed following a collision involving Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez at the exit of turn 2 in the penultimate lap of the race.
Prior to meeting with the stewards, Verstappen had stated that the incident occurred post-race and had been a common occurrence in the past. He expressed he was “somewhat surprised” that the stewards chose to investigate.
After hearing from all four drivers, the stewards concluded in identical statements for each: “The driver overtook other cars post chequered flag, but while a VSC was still displayed following the accident at turn 2.”
“The driver was reminded that while overtaking post chequered flag is not unusual, it is prohibited in cases of yellow flag procedures, safety car, or virtual safety car.”
“Although the drivers were aware of where the incident occurred, they could not ascertain whether emergency equipment or marshals were being dispatched onto the track, and must therefore proceed with caution.”
“The stewards acknowledge that this had occurred earlier in the season and was not reported at the time.”
“Thus, we issue a warning to the concerned driver, as well as all other competitors. Further breaches may result in significant penalties.”
