Vowles: Sargeant’s Williams F1 Seat in Jeopardy

17/05/2024

James Vowles has confirmed Logan Sargeant must improve quickly to retain his Williams F1 seat, with potential announcements regarding the 2025 lineup expected soon.

Logan Sargeant has been publicly urged to quickly improve his performance or risk losing his seat, confirmed Williams F1 team principal James Vowles.

Vowles indicated that the team might make an announcement regarding their 2025 driver lineup in the coming weeks.

Sargeant is in his second season in Formula 1, having scored only one point during last year’s United States Grand Prix.

Vowles stated after Free Practice 1 that he had “a very candid and direct conversation” with Sargeant, “which is a very difficult conversation to have.”

“But the simple fact is, as I have already explained, he is at risk. It’s a straightforward matter of fact behind all of this.”

“He needs to perform above his current level. It’s a meritocracy. I am supporting him on this journey. I want him to succeed. But in the meantime, we are in discussions with a few other drivers because we need to secure our lineup for 2025, 2026, and 2027 if he doesn’t improve very quickly.”

Sargeant’s future with the team became a topic of speculation at the previous round in Miami when it emerged that the FIA had received a request to allow Mercedes junior driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli to make his Formula 1 debut before his 18th birthday later this year.
