Vowles Reveals Strategy for Colapinto's Future

Williams F1’s Backup Plan for Colapinto Unveiled

27/09/2024

Williams F1 prepares a contingency for Franco Colapinto, with James Vowles detailing strategic intentions for the driver.

Franco Colapinto has no plan yet for the 2025 season. Filling in superbly for Logan Sargeant at Williams F1, he won’t secure a permanent seat, as Carlos Sainz is set to join Alex Albon.

James Vowles, the director of Williams, affirms that the Argentine won’t be left behind. Should Vowles’ attempted placement at Stake not succeed, Colapinto will have an extensive program with Williams throughout the year.

“Franco will still be part of the academy in our program, regardless,” Vowles confirmed. “What he will be next year, if Audi doesn’t take him—and for transparency, we are having discussions to see if that’s a path for him, where he could be on their grid for two years.”

“If he stays, we will run a two-year-old car, which actually has the same specifications as what we are currently using, and he will drive thousands and thousands of kilometers in this car to stay in shape.”

“He was working with us on the development of future cars, being in our simulator and conducting tests for us at the same time. And we have considered a number of racing series with him so he can continue to race concurrently.”

“He would be our reserve driver, ready to step in if something happens, and what I’ve learned over the last 12 months is that the situation with F1 drivers is never set in stone.”

“It’s good for us, we’ve signed, but watch next year—I think you’ll see a bit more movement. There are more opportunities at the same time, so having one of the best drivers available on the grid, I think, will be a strength.”
