Vowles: Colapinto pushed Albon to raise his game

Franco Colapinto’s impact on Williams F1 is undeniable, boosting Alexander Albon’s performance and adding valuable skill to the team.

James Vowles, Williams F1 team principal, admitted that Alexander Albon has faced increased pressure since Franco Colapinto joined the team.

Vowles stated that the decision to promote Colapinto to the team in place of Logan Sargeant had three positive effects, including pushing Albon to elevate his performance.

“First of all, simply by his character, Franco is someone who has enjoyed every moment in Formula 1 and within the team. You could see it in what he expressed to the world, what he said on television, and how he communicated over the radio.”

“This helps because you have a closely-knit team, offering an opportunity to someone who deserved his chance and deserved to be in Formula 1.”

“Secondly, it pushed Alex. There’s no doubt about it. We’ve progressed as a team because we’ve explored different areas, tried various setups, electronic tools, and new approaches to laps. And every driver in the world, every human being, improves when challenged. And ultimately, Franco has brought skill to the team.”

“Finally, what we’ve seen is that we have a bright future ahead. We have an academy thriving in the background, and Franco is a shining member of it. But we also have many more, much younger, some as young as 10. The Williams Academy is real, it’s authentic, and we’re going to put these drivers into F1 if they earn it. Franco embodies that realization.”
