Sebastian Vettel impressively returned to racing, testing Porsche’s 963 LMDh at the Aragon circuit, showcasing his undiminished skills.
Following a shakedown in Germany a few days ago, Sebastian Vettel took to the Aragon circuit during a Porsche Penske Motorsport test session, driving the 963 LMDh. The four-time F1 World Champion thus returned to the cockpit of a race car.
Laurens Vanthoor, Kevin Estre, Andre Lotterer, Fred Makowiecki, Matt Campbell, and Michael Christensen, who are the WEC title drivers for the German firm, also participated, along with DTM driver Thomas Preining. Vettel enjoyed the 118 laps he completed around the circuit.
“Of course, I keep an eye on other motor racing disciplines and know many drivers active in the WEC and at Le Mans,” said the German, who is yet undecided about participating in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. “At some point, my curiosity peaked to the extent that I toyed with the idea of trying it out myself.”
“Porsche provided me with the chance to test a current hypercar with the 963. After seat fitting, simulator sessions, and testing at Weissach, I already felt quite at home. Driving the Porsche 963 on the Aragon circuit was truly enjoyable.”
“I initially had to acclimatize and find my pace. The driving experience differs, notably due to the roof overhead, increased weight, and tires. Porsche’s factory drivers were immensely helpful, clarifying what was unique and what I needed to adapt to, making the transition smoother.”
Vettel’s Impactful Porsche Aragon Test
Jonathan Diuguid, the director of Porsche Penske, praised Vettel’s test session and also elaborated on why the Aragon circuit was chosen for this test, which also benefitted the regular drivers: “Aragon is one of the few places in Europe where we can operate 24/7, allowing us to conduct 36 consecutive hours of testing in preparation for Le Mans.”
“The circuit’s long back straight enables us to achieve the top speed of over 300 km/h, reminiscent of the 24 Hours circuit speeds. Having Sebastian Vettel join is a unique opportunity for the team. He is a four-time Formula 1 World Champion.”
“His extensive experience with hybrid systems and high-performance race cars offers a fresh and unique perspective on the car’s condition and feedback on our systems and performance is invaluable. We are delighted to have him with us. Exiting the car with a smile is always a positive sign.”
