Sebastian Vettel’s return to Formula 1 is off the table, blocked by his children, though a role at Red Bull might still be in play.
Sebastian Vettel, the four-time Formula 1 World Champion, has officially been told by his children that a return to the sport is off the table. Although he retired from racing at the end of the 2022 season, rumors of a possible comeback continued to circulate, even into 2024.
The most likely destination for Vettel, should he return, was Audi F1, but the team has already signed Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto. Vettel had also explored the possibility of rejoining Red Bull, but team advisor Dr. Helmut Marko confirmed that they declined to bring him back alongside Max Verstappen. Marko explained that the decision was made to protect Vettel’s image—implying that Verstappen could have easily outperformed him.
While a return to the track might have been tempting, Vettel revealed that his children had put a stop to any future racing plans. “My kids told me I’m not allowed to race anymore,” he shared. “They really enjoy having me around, and it’s a pleasure to hear that.”
Vettel, who is a father of three, admitted that he has found a new rhythm in life since leaving Formula 1. “I’ve managed to find peace outside of racing, and it’s been great for the family,” he said. “I’ve gotten used to my new life.”
Although his full-time F1 career seems to be over, Vettel has not ruled out racing in other series like the WEC (World Endurance Championship) or even competing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the future. In fact, he has also been mentioned as a potential replacement for Marko in the future leadership of Red Bull’s driver program.
When asked about this possibility, Vettel answered cautiously, “These are big questions with no quick answers.”
