Waché compares Verstappen to sports legends, praising his unparalleled abilities on the track.
Pierre Waché is effusive in his praise for Max Verstappen, readily drawing parallels between him and some of the most illustrious athletes in the history of various sports. According to Red Bull’s technical director, the three-time world champion possesses a unique prowess.
“He is like the legends of each sport,” Waché told Crash.
“Some individuals can perform feats that no one else is capable of. I don’t know how or why. But that’s what he can do.”
“He is akin to Roger Federer, like Michael Jordan. These are people who can do things that no one else can. The driver is the controller of the car, and he has the ability to control and operate the car in a way that nobody else has.”
“This allows him to firstly free up some of his cognitive capacity to drive while simultaneously analyzing what he needs and what he wants. His reactions are very interesting because he uses the car to its limit, unlike anyone else.”
The engineer explains why the feedback from drivers is crucial in modern F1 and how their confidence behind the wheel is as vital as performance: “The feedback from both drivers is very important for the way we develop, because designing a fast car isn’t difficult.”
“What is difficult is making a fast car usable for the driver. If I am in the car, I won’t be able to extract its performance. The operation of this type of car is so specific that the driver, and how he uses it, is very important.”
