Max Verstappen’s controversial gesture in Bahrain won’t lead to FIA sanctions, as Red Bull insists it was a lighthearted joke.
The FIA is not expected to take any action against Max Verstappen’s latest misstep. The four-time world champion has been one of the federation’s targets after several behavioral lapses, as rules regarding driver conduct and expression are set to become increasingly strict.
The four-time world champion made headlines with a middle finger gesture from the cockpit of his Red Bull in Bahrain last Friday, directing it towards the Williams pit wall. The team downplayed the incident, likely to prevent any backlash from the FIA.
“The gesture was meant as a joke towards a friend from a rival team,” a Red Bull spokesperson told Bild, confirming that the FIA does not appear to be investigating or considering a penalty. “We don’t expect any consequences.”
Nico Hülkenberg, for his part, believes the FIA should be less strict and avoid scrutinizing every move drivers make: “I don’t think I’ve ever heard Formula 1 fans or even casual viewers complain about driver behavior or say they set a bad example. On the contrary, I think people like seeing athletes express their emotions.”
