F1’s Triple-Headers: Verstappen Calls for Change

26/09/2024

Max Verstappen criticizes the spread of F1 triple-headers, advocating for tighter race scheduling to ease travel strains.

The 2024 F1 calendar introduces a new schedule, featuring a four-week break between races, followed by two sets of triple-headers. Yuki Tsunoda expresses skepticism about six races in seven weeks, primarily concerned for the mechanics and staff who need to arrive at circuits very early.

“There is also a four-week interval after Singapore. So, there’s some time to rest and recharge before embarking on three weeks of racing back to back,” the RB F1 driver stated.

“I feel fine about it, but it will definitely be tough, especially for the mechanics, the engineers, because it will be much harder for them than for us. So, yes, it’s more important for them, I believe, than for the drivers.”

Max Verstappen feels prepared for the remainder of the schedule but criticizes that the triple-header races are not more geographically compact: “I’ve always said that it’s a lot of races, of course, that we have in the schedule.”

“But I think for me, it’s mainly the travel with the time difference between Vegas and Qatar. I think we could do a bit better if we organized triple-header races a bit closer together. For me, that would make a bit more sense.”

“If we have to organize as many races, we should at least ensure they are closer to each other. But again, of course, it depends on ticket sales. But yes, I mean, ultimately, you have to find a middle ground, right? It’s a long flight between Vegas and Qatar.”

“But then, of course, you’re in Qatar, you fly to Abu Dhabi, which is fine. For me, it’s not a problem. But yes, at the end of the season, when you’re a bit tired, it’s easier to get sick. And being on a plane for a long period doesn’t help.”

Lance Stroll agrees with Verstappen and thinks that the geographic zone scheduling, a final project for Liberty Media, is a good solution.

“I agree. I think we could probably do a better job, as Max said, by geographically linking the races, so that we do Asia, then America, and then, you know, the Middle East.”

“There are still a lot of jumps, time differences, and other challenges within the teams, while I think as drivers, we have it quite easy compared to some team members and staff who struggle with the travel.”
