Max Verstappen secured a thrilling victory at Imola, expertly fending off Lando Norris’s late charge despite tire issues and a looming penalty.

Max Verstappen clinched a thrilling victory at Imola, fending off a late charge from Lando Norris. The Red Bull driver had severely worn tires and faced a five-second penalty if he exceeded track limits again, but he managed to hold on until the finish.

“I attacked the entire race. We were strong on the medium tires, but it was harder to manage on the hards, especially in the last 10-15 laps. I had no grip, and I was sliding a lot. Lando closed in, and I had to push with tires that weren’t working anymore. I’m very happy to win,” said Verstappen.

The victory was largely due to the behind-the-scenes efforts of Sébastien Buemi on Friday night. The reserve driver spent several hours in the simulator to correct the issues from a disastrous Friday for Red Bull, and Verstappen acknowledged that this contributed to the win, despite the unexpected tire management challenges.

“We changed many things on the car, and we lacked information, which might be why we struggled with the hard tires. But considering where we started the weekend, we can be satisfied with a pole and a victory.”
