Verstappen back on top: Claims Sprint pole in Austin showdown

18/10/2024

Max Verstappen returns to pole in Austin’s Sprint race, showcasing his resilience in a challenging qualifying session.

Max Verstappen set the fastest time in the Sprint Shootout in Austin, securing pole position for Saturday’s Sprint at the United States Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver was surprised to claim the top spot given the tricky conditions during the session but relished the challenge and, more importantly, overcoming it.

“I had a good day. Sprint qualifying is always challenging with medium and soft tyres, as you never quite know how hard you can push. But I’m satisfied, everything worked well, and I’m happy to be first – it’s been a while!” Verstappen remarked.

“It was really intense, and this circuit is fantastic to drive. There’s the new asphalt, then the old, then the new again, then the old bumpy sections, so it’s not easy. It’s the same for everyone, but over a single lap, it’s tough, yet fun.”

The three-time world champion is keen to maximise his points haul throughout the Austin weekend: “We’ll do our best tomorrow in the Sprint, but the bigger points are up for grabs on Sunday, so that’s where our focus will be.”
