Max Verstappen believes Daniel Ricciardo deserved a better farewell from Red Bull following his abrupt Formula 1 exit.
Max Verstappen did not hesitate to criticize his employer, Red Bull, stating in Austin that Daniel Ricciardo deserved a “nicer send-off” from F1 following his exit from RB F1 after the race.
Shortly after the Singapore Grand Prix weekend, Red Bull’s sister team confirmed that Liam Lawson would take Ricciardo’s place for the rest of the season. It was widely understood during the race that Ricciardo had been informed.
However, neither RB F1 nor Red Bull offered a public farewell, and while Ricciardo has not officially announced his retirement from F1, his return seems highly unlikely. Ricciardo struggled to regain his form at RB F1, having also faced challenges at McLaren in 2021 and 2022.
“I think it was quite clear to me, and to Daniel, that it was his last race,” Verstappen said in Austin.
“And the media knew it, as did the fans.”
“From my side, I think it could have been handled a bit differently.”
The Dutchman, who spent three years alongside Ricciardo at Red Bull, believes the Australian deserved something more meaningful than a fastest lap as his send-off.
“He knew, but he couldn’t say it openly – that’s a bit of a shame. He did a lot for everyone, for F1. He won races. He had incredible performances. I think he deserved a nicer exit.”
