Verstappen Seeks Change from Red Bull’s Matte Blue Tradition

Verstappen Calls for Fresh Livery Design for Red Bull RB21

30/12/2024

Max Verstappen urges Red Bull to shake up its familiar livery design, hinting he’s ready for something new in 2025.

Max Verstappen has expressed his wish for his team to “spice things up a bit” with the livery of the 2025 Red Bull RB21, as the team has stuck to a series of similar matte blue liveries in recent years.

The use of matte paint on the livery helps save a small amount of the car’s weight, but the Dutchman still hopes for something fresh next year, despite Red Bull’s tendency to stick to its core design. Will his wish be granted?

When asked on Red Bull’s internal podcast about when he would first see the 2025 car, he replied: “Well, when I return to the factory for the first time after the holidays, I’ll get a small glimpse of it.”

The 10 teams will unveil their liveries at London’s O2 Arena in February to celebrate Formula 1’s 75th anniversary, and when asked if he was looking forward to the event, the reigning world champion said: “I’m mostly excited to see my own car.”

“The livery—I hope it will be a bit different. I was just discussing this with the team recently; I really like those other F1 cars [pointing to the older Red Bulls behind him, editor’s note] with the glossy finish.”

“We’ve had so many matte blue cars, but I think it’s nice to mix things up now and then.”

“Matte is slightly lighter. If we need to keep it, then maybe the color could be a bit different.”

The joint launch featuring all 10 teams in London is scheduled for February 18, followed by three days of pre-season testing in Bahrain from February 26 to 28. Meanwhile, some teams are planning their own launches. Ferrari has already announced that its real 2025 F1 car will be unveiled in Maranello on February 19.
