Verstappen Reaffirms Loyalty to Red Bull Amid Mercedes Links

30/11/2024

Max Verstappen discusses the transfer rumours linking him to Mercedes, reaffirming his loyalty to Red Bull for their support and success.

Max Verstappen admitted what his reaction was when Mercedes F1 approached him about a potential transfer for 2025 during the season.

Mercedes showed interest in a surprise move for Verstappen earlier this year. Internal conflicts at Red Bull – centred around Christian Horner – raised questions about Verstappen’s future.

Toto Wolff publicly expressed his desire to sign Verstappen, as he needed a replacement for Lewis Hamilton, who was moving to Ferrari.

“It’s always important to keep your options open,” Verstappen said when asked about Wolff’s approach to his management.

“But it was very clear that it wasn’t on the cards. I was winning here at the start of the year.”

“And then, when problems arise, running away immediately is not something I’m comfortable with. It’s just not right for anyone.”

“I’m loyal to this team for what they’ve done for me. And it goes both ways.”

Verstappen reiterated his intention to spend his entire career racing for Red Bull Racing, provided the conditions remain right.

“You’d prefer not to deal with all these political issues. I’ve always tried to focus on performance, work with the engineers, and not mess things up. I have a very good relationship with Horner. It’s a strong relationship.”

“I don’t think it’s necessary to leave Red Bull. It’s not something I want. I’m just happy where I am. And it would be great if you could just stay with a team and race there forever. I’d like to believe that. That’s the goal, as long as the conditions are right.”

“It’s not like I have to try to win the world championship elsewhere. It’s not something I desire.”

Verstappen also revealed that he isn’t concerned about his legacy in the sport.

“Absolutely not. I don’t value my success based on what others say. If I’m happy, that’s all that matters. In this sport, you also need a bit of luck to stay in the right team for a long time. That doesn’t mean the guy with the most titles is actually the best.”
