Verstappen overcame pressure to secure second, while Pérez’s struggles led to a disappointing performance before his home crowd.
Max Verstappen secured second place in the Mexican Grand Prix qualifying session. The Red Bull driver had his initial Q3 lap time deleted, but ultimately managed to secure a spot on the front row for the race start, acknowledging that he had to cope with significant pressure.
“Yesterday, I could barely complete a lap, so I had to make up for lost time; FP3 was not good. I was under pressure, and then my Q3 lap got deleted, which only added to the pressure. But I’m very happy to be on the front row—I didn’t think it would be possible,” said Verstappen.
“This is probably one of the toughest circuits to put together a good lap. Street circuits are challenging, but this one is too; there’s little grip, it’s easy to lock up or slide, and the tyres overheat quickly. It’s among the most difficult tracks on the calendar.”
For Sergio Pérez, the home qualifying session turned into a disaster, with an early elimination in Q1: “It was very tough, stopping the car was extremely difficult. I just couldn’t find any grip under braking. I couldn’t stop the car early enough, and I was putting too much energy into the tyres just to brake. That was the main issue for me.”
“It was very similar to the rest of the weekend. I can’t stop the car, and I’m really struggling with the transition from high speed to low speed, much like in Austin, where I couldn’t attack the corners under braking—and there are a lot of those here.”
The Mexican driver remains hopeful of climbing into the top 10 but is realistic about the challenge: “Tomorrow, it will be crucial to try to make the most of the day. If we manage to score good points, it would be a huge effort, but it’s going to be very difficult given our position. I’m disappointed for my fans, of course.”
