Max Verstappen backs Antonelli’s F1 success, calling his podium finish unsurprising, a confident nod to the sport’s next generation.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli became the third-youngest driver to step onto a podium this weekend, behind Lance Stroll, who ranks second, and Max Verstappen. The Mercedes F1 driver acknowledged that sharing the podium with the four-time world champion is impressive.
“Racing in F1 alongside the other 19 best drivers on the grid is very motivating. Having the chance to perform at your best and show what you’re capable of is a huge boost. Of course, seeing what Max has achieved over the years, especially in his rookie seasons, is absolutely stunning,” said Antonelli.
“He’s definitely a role model I look up to. But ultimately, racing against the best is a great opportunity. And having someone like George as a teammate really helps you improve. I owe this result to George as well, because he helped me grow and push myself throughout this first part of the season.”
Verstappen, for his part, revealed that he expected such a level from Antonelli: “For me, it’s not a surprise. I’ve known Kimi since his karting days – people were already speaking highly of him back then.”
“So I kept an eye on him. I think what’s impressive is that he’s naturally fast. What I like is his calm and composed approach. Those are great qualities to have. I never doubted that the podium would come this year.”
“He had a few unlucky races – one of them in the sprint was also partly my fault with the pit stop. But it was only a matter of time. I’m very happy it happened for him. It gives you more confidence.”
“It’s a good boost. And it will only get better. You’re in your first season – so much is coming at you. You learn from the weaker races, and you learn from the strong ones. In the years to come, we will definitely see a lot more of Kimi.”
