Verstappen risks suspension after receiving three penalty points from the FIA for his controversial on-track clash with George Russell.
FIA Delivers Its Verdict on the Initial Collision..
The FIA stewards have provided their explanation for the collision between Max Verstappen and George Russell and have issued, as we anticipated, penalty points to the Red Bull driver.
However, the FIA was stricter than expected, handing Verstappen three points, bringing his total to 11 points.
If a driver accumulates 12 points within a 12-month period, they receive a suspension. Verstappen will regain two points at the end of the month during the Austrian Grand Prix, but he could still face another penalty shortly for his collision with Charles Leclerc on the straight. One more point, and he will automatically be suspended for one race in Canada.
The stewards stated: “Based on the radio communications, it was clear that the team had instructed the driver of car 1 (Verstappen) to ‘give the position back’ to car 63 (Russell), which related to a previous infringement by car 1, having left the track and gained a lasting advantage.”
“In fact, we had later decided to take no further action regarding that incident. The driver of car 1 was clearly unhappy with the team’s instruction to give the position back. Approaching turn 5, car 1 significantly reduced its speed, seemingly allowing car 63 to pass.”
“However, after car 63 had passed car 1 at the entry to turn 5, car 1 suddenly accelerated and made contact with car 63. The collision was without doubt caused by the actions of car 1.”
“We have therefore imposed a 10-second penalty on car 1 and added three penalty points to the driver.”
